There are several important initiatives underway to digitize books in the world that are not protected by copyright. Google and Microsoft are leading this effort. (Ask for the service organizations). In addition, there is a winning efforts of groups like the Open Content Alliance.
large deposits of the entire text of the books now in the major search engines. It is possible to do a Google search limited to books. Books can be searched, how many other categories of Google, such as Web, images, videos, news, maps, etc.
This research may be conducted by the tab “More” at the top of the main search page of Google. Clicking on it shows reveal many gifts, including books. Does this mean that Shakespeare suddenly appears in the results? It is unlikely, but it offers some interesting opportunities for research, and a huge time saver for students and scientists whose content indexed to be online.
Why should it be of interest to Internet users and Internet writers? Well, it will open the letters, first in the Western literature, several thousands of millions of readers. There are only about one billion people around the world have access to libraries in their countries of origin, especially in developed countries. Knowledge of the world will soon be accessible to the world a much wider audience.
important collections, including: New York Public Library and libraries at the University of Michigan, Harvard, Stanford and Oxford have signed with Google. Others wanted a more open free open access to their files from any possibility of commercial interest in the Boston Library Consortium (19 members), including the University of Massachusetts, University of Connecticut. The Smithsonian and the University of California, are other institutions that have opted for the offers from Microsoft and Google.
To give the scope of this effort into perspective it about 32 million pounds in the world that could be analyzed by the effort. This number is disputed, since many books have been exhausted, but technically not protected by copyright. Google makes no such distinction, and has decided that all is exhausted or to digitize outside of copyright. This has resulted in praise from some quarters and anger from others, especially the editors and authors. Google’s undiminished in the midst of many trials, but their efforts continue, and probably will take years for the courts to settle the details. Ironically, also are an agreement for Google. (See below sources).
Technically, the number of books in the world is much smaller if only the copyrights of books. (See table below).

At the University of Michigan, with a dedicated team of property and software, Google is able to digitize one million books per year. It will take about six years to the entire collection of Google Library copy 7 million volumes.
The amount of memory needed to store a single book is about 1MB, Google has digitized more than 10,000 online servers to index the entire web page, that more than 2 billion Web. 32 million MB of data storage required to store the collection is in the world of books, the information on a scale much larger than the entire web today.
It was shown that costs $ 30.00 for the Open Content Alliance to digitize a book (although the costs are much lower than Google). There may be more than 10 years and digitize between 500 million and 1 billion dollars to the books in the world. (This may be a gross overestimation, since no data will be made by Google in this area over the cost of Google, and most aggressive effort.) These costs, it is easy to understand why it is important to Google that effort.
Without taking sides one way or another on the legal consequences of what Google is obviously the idea of digitizing books is an idea whose time has come. If Stanford its catalog cards only in electronic form in a relatively short time, students were twice as likely to visit the library and books to consult twice. Such observations, it is clear that the availability of the books will soon be outdated is not the existence of libraries online.
