Outdoor Research Women’s Sonata Hooded Jacket

I am wearing the Outdoor Research Women’s
Sonata Hoody. This is a feather light down jacket that is nice and toasty warm for those
late fall days when you just need some extra insulation to keep you warm. It is a great
belay jacket. It would be great for hiking, backpacking , traveling, when you need something
very lightweight and packable, but something that is going to keep you nice and warm. The features here are really simple and really
great. It is insulated with 650 fill power goose down. And that gets the weight down
to under 12 ounces. So it is about 11.7 ounces. And then the face fabric is also very lightweight.
It is Pertex Quantum fabric. It is 100 percent nylon rip stop, so you do have some durability
there, but it is 22 denier fabric so it is very lightweight, so it keeps the overall
weight of this jacket down. You have got nice baffles in this jacket as
well. So that down is going to stay exactly where you need it. You are not going to have
unwanted shifting of down. And the features of the jacket are streamlined and simple,
but it is a very feature rich jacket for the weight. You do have a full length zipper and
on the inside you have two dump pockets. So these are really nice pockets. You can put
an extra pair of gloves, an extra hat or something like that in there. So nice pockets there.
And then two hand level pockets on the outside. These are nice hand warmer pockets. On the
inside you have a nice fleece material. So that is going to keep your hands nice and
warm on chilly days and you do have adjustability around the hem. The adjustability just comes
out to one side. So you can cinch that down just to hold the heat in. The back of the
jacket has a dropped hem, so that isn’t going to ride up on you. It is a really nice
feature there. So it comes down a little bit lower than a standard jacket. You do have a chest pocket up here to store
smaller items. But it is a pretty big chest pocket, so you could, you know, throw an extra
pair of gloves in there if you needed to. Around the cuffs you just have stretchy Lycra,
so no adjustability in the cuff, but it is very comfortable. It fits really well over
top of gloves or if you put gloves over top of it. And it is such a lightweight jacket
that you could definitely get a layer over top of it. So while this Pertex Quantum material
is pretty weather resistant, it is not completely waterproof. So you could put a shell over
top just to keep you really protected from the elements. I am wearing a size small right now and it
fits really well. It fits true to size of what I would expect from Outdoor Research.
I am just wearing a lightweight t-shirt on underneath of it right now, but I could definitely
get some more layers under it to be a little bit warmer if you want to layer up in really
cold temperatures. If I move up to the hood, first of all you
have a nice collar here up at the top. So if you just need to cinch that down it fits
really well around your neck. And then the hood has adjustability around the top. You
have a little bit of a brim there on the end of the hood. And the you can adjust that on
either side. So the cord goes right down into the inside of the jacket so it is not in your
way. And then if I zip that up, you have some nice
stretch around the hood as well. So it is going to keep your head nice and warm. It
is definitely a head shaped hood. It is not necessarily helmet compatible. It is not big
enough, necessarily, to have a helmet on underneath of it, but it is a really nice warm hood.
So I really like that feature, just to keep you a little bit warmer in those temperatures. Overall it feels really lightweight and really
airy on. It packs down to be really small and it actually packs down into one of the
hand pockets. So all you have to do is turn that pocket inside out and stuff it into the
pocket. So it doesn’t weigh anything when you have it stored away in your backpack,
but when you need it and take it out, it really makes a big difference with that warmth. It is the Outdoor Research Women’s Sonata
Hoody.
